An estimated 40.3 million men, women and children are victims of modern slavery on any given day according to a recent study by the Global Slavery Index. Of these, 24.9 million people are in forced labour and 15.4 million people are living in a forced marriage. Women and girls are vastly over-represented, making up 71 percent of victims. Modern slavery is most prevalent in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific region. While these are the most reliable estimates to date, the Global Slavery Index is still conservative as there are significant gaps in data.
